What Can The Police Do When It Comes To A Deaf Person

There have been many instances where the police have actually gotten things wrong because they are not giving a person who is deaf a chance to explain what they are doing. Something that makes all of the difference is the time of day, when a police officer shines the light into a deaf persons car it gets even worse. Not all deaf people can read the lips despite the fact that many people can, so just take this into consideration. Even if they a good a situation like this would be impossible because the light is stopping them from being able to see. So what does a deaf person do in this situation?

Most instances a deaf person will try to find the document they have with them that explains they are deaf but the police officer isnt to know that is what they are going after. You can see why the officer would be suspicious if the person is still bending down to look for something ig they are deaf they just cannot hear the officers shouts. If the deaf person is still bending over in the opposite direction you can imagine the result of this incident.

To be fair I do see it from the police officers point of view, they have no idea what the person is reaching for, they could in fact not be going after their hearing aid but a gun or a knife and sometimes it just isn’t worth risking to wait and see. All officers need is a bit of training on the subject because it cannot be easy to handle a situation like this.
